Hey Everyone! Man, have I ever been missing you guys! I hope everyone at school is doing well, that the show (can't believe I'm missing it!) is a big success, and that you haven't forgotten that dance major classes are meant for more than watching movies! I've sent a new set of instructions in for today and tomorrow...mostly background research for the DMB's and choreography time for the DMA's. One of the sheets for the DMB's asks you to compare characteristics of contemporary dance with characteristics of (Chilean) folk dance. Answer the following questions for each style of dance: How do the dancers use their arms? Feet and legs? Torso? Describe the movements, shapes, tempo and size. What relationships, pathways and formations are used by the dancers? Describe the relationship between the accompaniment and the dance. Here are some examples you can examine. Watching the whole video will give you more information than watching just the first 30 seconds! 1. You won't be allowed to hold the "music" in your hand
2. Your task is to show the rhythm clearly through your movement

You'll be marked on how clean and polished the presentation is as well.

There are a lot of careers for dancers out there - from backup dancer to ballroom instructor to principal ballerina. But how much do dancers actually make in a year? Here are a few figures - from the States - that can give you an idea of how much a dancer can earn in a week.

 

There is lots of great information on dance/anatomy and dance injuries out there, but I've never seen anything quite this beautiful on the topic.  Enjoy!

It was great to see you all working so intently and creatively on the latest choreography project.  In response to your requests, I am posting the music for our "time" choreography here so you can practice.  Keep your eyes open - or better yet, sign up for updates.  That way you'll never miss a beat on the Westwood Dance blog!

It's that time of year....report cards have just come out, the holidays are a few weeks away, and maybe we're all wondering just what is going to happen next to keep us warm while the snow flies.

Well, it's time to shift gears a bit in the Westwood dance majors classes!

The DMB class has completed a skills test in jazz technique and is moving on to modern classes, where we'll spend time working both on technique and improvisation.  In our ballet classes we're moving on to unit two, with focus on pirouettes, traveling steps, more challenging jumps and grand allegro.  

Anatomically speaking, the shoulder girdle, arms, neck and head round out our studies.  In our choreography, time is of the essence; we will be working on solo choreography on the theme of time.

Keep your eyes and ears open - our critical analysis unit where we watch and study a professional work is coming up!

If you're in the DMA class, there will be new material heading your way too.  Great job to everyone on the Ballet Unit One test - now on to Unit Two!  Get ready for your Jazz Skills Test during the first week of December.

We will be starting a new anatomy package today, and wrapping up our choreography assignment on rhythm. 

And don't forget your critical analysis, too.  Maybe popcorn with your movie?
