We began today by warming up with our Graham-style class materials. Today we covered:
- Warm Up "Butterflies"
- Bounces and Circles
- Contractions
- Seated Spirals
- Floor Exercise
You will be drawing your movement material from these exercises. You can use any part of any choreography for these, but you may not use recognizable sections. Also, you may change, interpret or add to the movements to more fully communicate the feeling of being imprisoned.
Take some time to brainstorm Actions, Dynamics, use of Space and Relationship in these exercises, and how they will link to the idea of being imprisoned. Write your ideas on a star/cloud sheet.
Wait....how can we have Relationship in a solo?
Think about what is going on for Icarus as he is imprisoned. What does he imagine freedom will be like? How does he physically feel being locked in a tower? What does he remember from his past? What does he wish for?
As human beings we have relationships with the world around us, but we also have relationships with ourselves and our experiences. What ADSR can we use to show what we think he feels?
Your assignment in class - create at least 30 seconds of choreography for the "Imprisoned" section of your solo.
WAIT....I don't know how to start and I am panicking!!!!
Here are two choreography prompts that you may use to begin your "Imprisoned" dance
- Begin standing tall, strong and defiant facing the audience. Contract, turn and sit suddenly. Kneel tall on knees, contract and fall.
- Crouch small and scared. Reach out to a spiral lunge nervously, tentatively and trembling. Fully stretch, then crumble to a ball. Look up, reach up.
HOMEWORK - Refine the choreography you created today, solidifying the movements and adding detail and creativity. We will be sharing the refined work with each other.
